My Life At Selgars Mills, Uffculme, Devon

A Memory of Uffculme.

I was an evacuee during the Second World War and was sent to Devon I wasn't quite 4 years old. I remember staying with Auntie Hetty and Uncle Jack I think their surname was Gay. I was there from 1939 until 1943 or 1944 they were the happiest times of my childhood we lived at Selgars Mills and I used to feed the chickens and help Uncle Jack in the Mill I had such a dream childhood. We had a car and Uncle Jack and Auntie Hetty used to take me to the beach and lots of places. I went to the local school and my Mum used to come down from London to see me. As Auntie Hetty and Uncle Jack didn't have any children themselves they wanted to adopt me but as my mum wouldn't let them she took me back to London. I never saw them again until after ai got married and Ron and I went to see them at the Mills. The next time we saw them they had sold the Mills and moved just outside Exeter, I never saw them again. It would be lovely if I could get some pictures of the Mills during the war and if anybody remembers anything about Hetty and Jack I would love to hear from them.
