More about this scene

Bottomley did not pay his bills on time, and sometimes not at all, but he played the role of a genial squire with gusto; besides building estate cottages, he also bred race horses. He built Stud House for his trainer and this row of cottages for his stable lads and staff. Beyond are former stud buildings. All is now part of St Bede's School, with the cottages converted to dormitories and dormers added in the roof.
