More about this scene

The tiny church of St Olaf at Wasdale Head is said to be among the smallest in England. It is surrounded by the dramatic mountains of Wasdale, popular with walkers and climbers, and as a result is one of the most visited churches in the Lakes. There are many memorials in the 400-year-old building to walkers and climbers who have met their deaths on England's highest hills.

A Selection of Memories from Wasdale Head

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Wasdale Head

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

In a sketch I have dated October 1881 there is a cord hanging down from the bell down the outside wall with a hand pull. The name on the sketch it is Wasldale church. Possibly by Beatrix Potter or E Rawnsley.
