Ice Cream Heaven In Gipsy Road

A Memory of Welling.

Ice cream was a special treat in our house back in the 1950's. The brand we had was always Lyons Maid, vanilla or strawberry,
considered superior to Walls. But for those special occasions, especially during summer, we would enjoy an icecream treat at Toni's famous ice cream parlour in Welling High Street. Then early one summer evening while at home in Gipsy Road, the sound of Greensleaves suddenly filled the air. The music was coming from the appearance of the very first ice cream van to be seen in Welling, long before Tonibell began selling soft ice cream from their iconic blue vans in the 1960's. This was a private enterprise offering the most delicious ice cream anyone had ever tasted. The van turned up regular as clockwork every Tuesday evening, Greensleaves always enticing a swathe of neighbours on to the street in a rush to buy the addictive ice cream. cut from blocks and served like a sandwich between two wafer biscuits. Several delicious flavours were on offer but the lemon was pure magic. Ice cream heaven in Gipsy Road.
