My Beloved Bonk
I have loads of memories of village life as a kid. I was born in 1961 and still live on the Bonk. I will probably die here as well. There were many old characters back then. Iron Bates the vegetable cart man (did some boxing apparently), he would come on his round down the Mitre RToad on Saturday. I remember his deep growling voice, as he shoved a brown paper bag with a few spuds in, saying "Gi' them to yer mam, she can pay next wick if her's short". If we were lucky we could ride on the horse to the top of the road round to owd Maxi Potts, on the corner of Pinfold Cottages. We would sit on his doorstep, with a jam sarnie each, and listen to the tales of how he shot Adolf Hitler when he was younger. He would show us a revolver wrapped in an old oily rag and say "There see, that's what I shot him with. Right between the eyes". Later... Read more
My Links to Cheslyn Hay
I was born in 'The Lot' on Cheslyn Hay in 1950. I have been able to trace my lineage back to the 1700's through the Brough, Horton and Cadman families. The Horton family lived in all or some of the cottages in Dundalk Lane. The last family member was Clarice Biddle[nee Horton] who died in the early 1980s. The cottages then passed to my mother and were eventually sold. They are called Rose Cottage and Pickwick Cottage respectively today. The Brough family can again be traced back to the 1700's. Interestingly, the Horton and Brough family became linked by marriage. Frederick Horton married Hannah Brough, thus, my mother and father are second cousins! The Cadman family first appear in Cheslyn Hay in 1919 when James Henry married Lillian Brough. A Horton marries a Brough and a Cadman marries a Brough! James Henry Cadman is my grandfather and he was always know as Harry. He spent all of his working life as a face worker at Hawkins Colliery. He died in 1989. His son Joseph, my... Read more

THE BAG WASH IN WEDNESFIELD .W.TON
There was an old bag wash where people could bring their dirty washing to be cleaned around New Street/North Street not far from the police station that was on the main Wolverhampton road. The police station was opposite J. Folks coal merchants. Can anyone recall where it was and are there any maps showing the old Bag Wash?
The Day The Commonwealth Secretary General Visited Wednesfield
Secretary General of the Commonwealth Mr Don McKinnon made his first visit ever to Wolverhampton. This is the first time in all the city's history that this has happened, and I can report he really enjoyed his day with us! I met him at the rail station at 9.36 the express train from London was smack on time. We travelled to the Mayor's Office where Mary and I got acquainted with the Commonwealth's top man! He was charming and was very interested in Wolverhampton. During the course of the day he remarked how nice it was "not to be in a capital city". Mr McKinnon was a very down to earth practical man who was interested in the city history , the way we organised local government and how the city was faring economically. We also spoke about the Commonwealth and their aims and the way that the organisation has developed. Gift to Church
Our year as Mayor and Mayoress of Wolverhampton was simply brilliant, we have some lasting memories of the events and the functions we attended on behalf of the city.
But we also tried very hard to help where we could a range of both individuals and organisations. I think that everyone now knows that we have provided a belt bucket and sling for the Royal British Legion so that the standard bearers can carry their emblems more comfortably.
We also have commemerated our Mayoral year by investing in an Oil Set for St Thomas´s Church. We have been very well served by St Thomas´s and we wanted to recognise the partnership we established with Rev John Points who acted as the Mayor´s Chaplain during our year.
We were advised that the Church would appreciate an `Oil Set´ so we have purchased one to assist in Church Services. Both Mary and I have been very fortunate to belong to the Church.

Phil Bateman Mayor - Opens Ashmore Park Community Centre
Bateman Opens Community Centre: Wednesfield North today boasts a new Community Centre after Mary and Phil Bateman MBE, as Mayor and Mayoress, opened the new venue on Griffith Drive, Ashmore Park this morning at 10.30 am. Councillor Phil Bateman said "We officially cut the ribbon and I explained how pleased I felt about the new development. It was a superb building and I was very pleased to see the facilities that were being offered to the residents of Wednesfield North. Those classes included Art, Pyro-techniques and Computers, also other facilities were being considered. I was also pleased to hear how partnership arrangements in both St Albans Church and Hodson House Sheltered Housing scheme was being explored. I urged that community group to do all that it could to develop facilities and opportunities that the community as a whole could be proud of. The Day We Topped Out £12m New Leisure Centre in Wednesfield!
£12m Wednesfield Leisure Pool. It has been a very big week for both myself and Mary, we have attended 11 individual events as well as trying to hold the day jobs down! On Monday we both attended the new Leisure Centre that is being promoted and instigated by the City Council at Bowman's Harbour in Wednesfield. It is a £12m high tech leisure centre of immense quality. I am sure that every one that will have noticed its development will already be impressed by its iconic shape, and the way it sits against the backdrop of that large hill. Not many people know but the coloured glass which is very much a feature of the building has a very close connection to the city. In fact it is about 300 yards away as the crow flies! It is manufactured at Watson's Glass, Process Works,Old Heath Road,Wolverhampton. The owner of the company is Evan Watson, this company have supplied the coloured laminated vanceva glass for the new leisure centre to Pilkington's who made the double... Read more
