Opened in September 1955 on a site facing Oakley Road, the school offered superb education facilities for the more academic students of the town. As a comprehensive, it became known as Southwood, then Queen Elizabeth School; in 2001, after a period of closure and redevelopment, it reopened as Corby Community College.

When I passed my 11+ in 1954 our class was sent to either Kettering Grammar School (for boys) or Kettering High School (for girls). That building in Bowling Green Road is now Kettering Borough Council's offices. There was great emphasis on 'deportment' at the school and if you walked correctly and carried yourself well you were given a red sash to wear as an example to all the other girls. I stood standing, in my new school uniform, outside the doors of the new Grammar School in September 1955. I was one of the first first years who started that day. Before the school opened, the children who passed the old 11+ had to travel to Kettering where they'd go to the Girl's High School- or the Boy's High School but now Corby had its own Grammar school with the cream of Teachers from around the country and a Co ...see more
This brings back the very vivid memory of me cycling into the bottom of the driveway and heading straight into the Sports Master's car (whose name eludes me!) and ending up on his bonnet, needless to say he was not amused! I was banned from cycling thereafter! I attended Corby Grammar when it was newly opened, and was taught Latin by Colin Dexter - a wonderful tutor. I was in 5 Shell in ...see more
