Memories Of My Youth In Harpurhey

A Memory of Harpurhey.

I lived in Blackley but spent most of my time walking up and down Factory Brew to visit Grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins in harpurhey.I went alfred street girls school during the years 1950-1954. I loved the school and would love to hear from anyone who was in my class during those years. I can remember the Southern twins from Baywood Street ,Pamela Ross ,Joyce Kevill,Joan Royle ,Mavis Bennel,BarbarabHalliwell and many more .After I left School I spent many happy times at Harpurhey Baths and drinking hot Vimto at the Temperance Bar on Rochdale Road. I loved shopping on Moston Lane looking at the music sheets at Wykkes music shop and wishing I could play the piano. I still can,t play the piano but I collect old music sheets. I went to the Empire Cinema when I was very young on Saturday Afternoons, when I was older I saw so many good films there . a man called Mr. Wilkinson was the manager . We all thought he was very special being in charge of a Cinema, he was a very nice man. The coke Yard was near the Cinema and I can remember my Mother and many other mothers pushing wooden trucks up Factory Brew to get coke for the fire.Ihad lots of friends who lived in Harpurhey . There is so much more I could write about. Before I finish I must write that all my family came from Harpurhey, my mother being the last of a large family when she died ten years ago at the age of 93. By that time my Mother lived in Apprentice Court which was very close to where she had lived as a girl.My mother had lived in a few streets in Harpurhey but the one I have fondest memories of is my Grandmothers house in Palatine Street which was ,sadly, knocked down in the 1970s. Some of my family lived in Alfred Street,Colton Street,Simister Street and others. My Grandmother had lived in Livesey Street when young and had gone to St. Catherines in Collyhurst. my Mother and her brother and sisters went to Burgess Street. We ,brother and cousin, went to Christ Church Sunday School. you can imagine how much walking we did up and down Factory Brew. I did go to Primary School in Blackley, Domett Street School. I do hope that someone may remember me.

I was reminiscing about drinking hot vimto at the temperance bar on Rochdale road, after swimming at Harpurhey Baths. I googled temperance bar Harpurhey, when up you popped!! I hope you are well! Thank you for your memories. We lived in Oak Bank Avenue, on the edge of Bogart hole clough (from 1959 to 1965) and our grandma lived on woodlands road, Cheetham Hill. We walked up and down Factory Brew, most Sundays. Very best wishes. Jane
