Growing Up In Hendon 1945 1970

A Memory of Hendon.

Being born in the front room of 7 First Avenue (which runs between Finchley Lane and Victoria Road) in September 1945 and living at that address until 1970 approximately, but my mother (Mary) and Father (Len) lived there until their death in 1985, one could say, that makes me an 'Old Hendonian'. I remember all the cinemas mentioned and the parks that were all our playgrounds. I worked for George and Colin Rich at the Greengrocers on Brent street in 1960-62 approximately, riding their trade delivery bicycle all over Hendon. I also delivered Newspapers from Jackson's Newsagents from about 1955 until 1958 approximately. Hendon was a special place to grow up, I hold it close in my heart. I was apprenticed at Handley Page Ltd. Cricklewood attending Hendon Tech. for 5 years, ending up in the design offices at Radlett Herts, but still living in Hendon. I also worked behind the Bar at The Prince Edward pub nick named "The Little House", which saddens me to hear is long gone. Happy Bartlett repaired all our shoes and was a Hendon Classic! Being a graduate (yes I live in Canada now, LOL) of Bell Lane Academy, and moving right into Whitefield Secondary School, the names are so many of my childhood. Shame I could not share an old picture.

Hello Anthony,
I too went to Bell Lane at the age of 5 approx. (Infants and then Junior School) and then moved on to Hendon Tech. 1951-1953 in the Commercial department. Like you have a fondness for Hendon I.e.the Classic cinema, the Burroughs and Hendon Park.
I can still remember the names of the class I was in at Bell Lane and the teachers I.e. Mr. Hayley , Mr. Lewis and Mr. Williams.
If you are interested I would would welcome making contact with you but I would fully understand if you weren't interested.
Best wishes.
