Keith Butler As A Lad.

A Memory of Heston.

I lived down fern lane at number 86, we moved there from cotingham in East Yorkshire when I was five, I went to norwood green infants and then junior school failed the 11plus and went to Heston secondary where I had the best five years of my life, not just at school but out of school with my pals, at the swimming baths and at the gravel pits as well.

Keith, I belong to a family of Hestons from Pittsburg, Kansas in the USA. I am a baby boomer born in 1946 after my father George Franklin Heston, returned from WWII. Was there ever a Heston Castle, and do you think we have a coat of arms. Just trying to get documents in order in case I get to old to help my children and grandchildren. God Bless

Although in my 80th year I have fond memories of living in a flat above my father's grocery shop at the corner of Fern Lane Heston and Crosslands Ave, Norwood Green. The shop, Platts Stores Ltd, had its head office in High Street, Hounslow. I attended Norwood Grn Infants and junior schools, (head Mr Wilkes) then after the scholarship went to Southall County Grammar on the 120 bus each day. Favourite teacher there was Miss Brookes, English. I had music lessons from Mrs Selby of Fern Lane, and learned to swim at Heston Baths. Also belonged to Girls Life Brigade at Heston Methodist Church, and Sunday School there too where Mr Harper was superintendent. Used to go to Heston a lot, and walked my dog Chummie over the fields to Osterley Park many times as well as Heston Park or Norwood Green, where the Lamb and the Lion pubs had a cricket match each year. Happy memories, thank you. Rita Rumble then, now Rita Burgess, living in Norfolk.
