Living In And Near Heston In The Early Sixties

A Memory of Heston.

I spent most of my early life just on the borders of Heston and southall, as my father was a male nurse working for the ministry and our house came with his job, back in the fifties, I and my mum and dad lived at boundary close, norwood green up until the early sixties when my dad retired and we moved to Heston, my parents bought a house in Hogarth gardens Heston a lovely road with nice neighbours, I was already attending the Heston secondary school, where I stayed on an extra couple of years to finish a commerce course, learning to type and use shorthand, with our teacher mrs. joyce. our headmaster was mr. whitley at that time, can remember many people from school, some names can't remember but some I do such as, jean tait, gwwen evans, gweneth Thomas, carol gooding, stella clements, Pamela davis and many more. susan hynes and myself used to go to Heston swimming club one night a week and her dad would give us a lift home to boundary close, on his motorbike and sidecar. I also remember the riding stables there was three in the area, mary delares at norwood green the wolf stables with jimmy styles and the lamb riding stables with Sylvia coles. used to go to st. marys church in tentelow lane, sunday school, and used to march there in the morning once a month with the brownies and girlguides, as I was a browny then. I remember all the shops at Heston and the sweet shop on the end of the parade where susan and I would buy some sherbert and liqurise after having spent a Saturday in the swimming baths.
My grandparents lived on the great west road at lampton, my grandmother used to breed and do obedience classes with her Alsations, and had her dog training lessons at osterly village hall. I now live in Northumberland. but miss the old days of Heston and surrounding area

I live in Boundary close as well between 1954 and 1964. I went back at the beginning of this year and was aware that the Close had been taken over by ethnic minorities. How times have changed! I Used to live in Nr 4. Does the name Rodwell ring a bell?
Yes I remember the Rodwell family, Lesley, Susan and David.
I lived at no.12, we stayed there for about 12 years, until my father bought a house in Heston before he retired, at that time, our direct neighbours where Richard Dyer and his parents, and Martin and younger brother Andrew, ( can't remember their surname ) there was also Raymond and Janet Brain, the Ede brothers, ( all 4 of them ) and a few more. I believe we used to go to Sunday school together, and remember bunking off on Sunday, and playing on Norwood Green instead, got into trouble when I got home, as we came home too early ! a dead giveaway, that we did not attend the service ! got a right telling off from my Dad, ( one person not to be crossed )
I presume you are one of the Rodwell children.
Regards Janet Smith

Hello wendy, unfortunately your friend lesley was at a different time, you appear to be a little later on, we were all about in the 50s and early 60s, at boundary close, before we all went our seperate ways and grew up !
Kind regards janet smith
I remember Heston well, used to attend Sunday Sch at the Methodist Church, also Girls Life Brigade. Learned to swim at Heston Baths, went to music lessons in Fern Lane, Heston, and attended Norwood Green Infants and Junior schools before the scholarship took me on to Southall County Grammar where I used to go on the 120 bus each day, passing the Lion and the Lamb pubs just by the canal at Norwood Green. My father was manager at Platt's Stores grocers shop, Norwood Green, head office was a big store in Hounslow High Street. I am now in my 80th year, living in Norfolk. Lovely memories of childhood in Heston and Norwood Green. Thank you. Rita Rumble (now Burgess)
