Essex memories

My Grandmother

Mrs Minnie Vale (nee Miller-Houson) lived in Steeple. I visited her as a 6 year old (from New Zealand) in 1958/59. I remember a wee store where she would allow me to choose sweets. I thought these were 'free' - until I realised in much later years that of course she had an account at the store! My mother Elizabeth (Betty) grew up in Steeple. She was one of nine children but I think they did not all live there. They were there during the Second World War. If anyone remembers or knows of my grandmother, I would love to communicate!

Jacqueline Oldman

While researching my family history I came across this article in the Eastern Counties Advertiser 18th October 1879. It is the coroner's report relating to my great great grandfather's brother Thomas Brassett 1815 - 1879 an agricultural labourer of Southminster Essex. He was born 2nd August 1871 and baptised 5th August the son of Thomas and Amelia.

Southminster
Found Drowned - On Saturday afternoon an inquest was held at the White Hart Inn, by Mr W Codd, touching the death of Thomas Brassett aged 64 years of age, whose body was found in a ditch early on Thursday morning last, near Plumbro House, on the Southminster marshes. The witnesss examined were Benjamin Boosey and George Sams; but there was no evidence how the man came into the ditch., although the previous evening he was seen reclining on the grass by the side of it. The Jury returned a verdict of 'Found drowned, but under what circumstances there is no evidence to show'. How times have changed!!

Happy Childhood Days

Many happy childhood weekends were spent on the River Blackwater at the Mill Beach Camp Site with my parents and brother. We often visited Maldon for provisions and I can remember a large "cake shop" on the corner by the bus station? As we came up the hill (what a hill!) a lady on the left always had a different flower arrangement in her window. Needless to say I went on to become a keen flower arranger. I visited Maldon a few years back and I am happy to say that the town hadn't changed much at all. We even walked along the sea wall to the plot where my parents had their last caravan before my father died in 1976. Lovely memories. Lovely place - would like to retire in Maldon if only I could afford it!

Happy Times in Maldon

My family and I moved from London in 1955 to Maldon, following a visit the year before with our Sunday School outing, and we moved near to the Prom. We had such happy times living there and as children my friends and I used to roam the Prom, the nearby sea-wall, fields, woods, and country lanes, in fact everywhere, in safety. What freedom we had then. We spent many hours in the cinema watching the latest films. In August a large fair would come to the Prom for two weeks, ending with a spectacular carnival on the last Saturday followed in the evening by a brilliant firework display around the marine lake. On Boxing Day we would walk up the High Street to the Blue Boar to watch the hunt leave and what a great sight it was. My family and I moved from Maldon in 1966 but I was allowed to get married the following year in All Saints Church. I haven't been back... Read more

The Gables

i was sent to The Gables from Boyles Court in Brentwood because I was a bit of a naughty boy. I liked it there, I loved Maldon, it has great memories for me as well as bad ones from the headmaster Mr Gosling becasue he was a one-legged bully, he used the cane very hard and very often, I hated him. I had a friend there called Roger Shilton. I was a member of the Boys Brigade, l liked that as well, but unfortunately I was taken from The Gables to another school in Langham.

Southminster Then Burnham

We moved to Southminster, Whitby Road and lived there till 1980 when we came to Burnham, where I live now. On 12th March 2008, I lost Glad so since then and now, live alone. I worked at St Peters School for seven years, and on building sites in Maldon & Southend. Coming from Brentwood - where I have added to my stories, still plenty to tell. Have written many of Billericay, my birthplace and have done plays of it - a favourite spot I visit now. Tuesdays we do a walk, fit Steeps anyone can join.

Our Wedding

My husband Reginald and I were married at St Andrews Minster Ashingdon at 2 pm on saturday 16 September 1972. The service was conducted by The Rector Rev. Norman Cotgrove. I had 7 bridesmaids in blue, green, lilic,& lemon. Our fathers D.Hayes & L Willis were witnesses .When we came out and started to pose for the photos someone noticed that there was smoke coming from the back of the minster .I dont know if it was a fire in the church or a bonfire behind the church. From the back of the church there is a view for many miles across the country side
