The Orion Cinema

A Memory of Midhurst.

My grandmother, Violet Bowden, worked as a usherette at the Orion. I used to love the Saturday afternoon matinee shows that gave sweets as prizes.
Towards the end of the cinemas time my friend Robert Constable and I were watching a film when the manager asked us if we would mind coming back another day as we were the only customers and he wanted to close!!

Hi Glenn
My mother and father lived at Iping and Stedham just outside Midhurst. I'm trying to find out if Midhurst had a cinema around the start of the second world war. I am writing a capstone story which involves my Uncle Fred who died retreating towards Dunkirk saving a whole village from the German advance. Their (Four of them) Bren Gun Carrier was destroyed from the first shell that landed from a German 'tank' positioned on the next hill to the village in Belgium. He was a very brave man along with his comrades, to think of saving a village full of strangers, rather than save his and theirs, own skin.
I'd be grateful for any help
Kindest regards
