Shops In Green Lane

A Memory of Northwood.

My father was manager of a drapers shop at the lower end of Green Lane in the 1950's. It was called Ryder's of Northwood. If you turned left down Green Lane at the war memorial (as this photo shows) it would have been the second to last shop on the right hand side, just before the bank. The shop comprised three floors; a basement selling fabrics, the ground floor which was habedashery, underwear etc...and an upper floor which was ladies fashions. Does anyone else have any memories of this? I also recall that next door was a stationers shop called Rawlindsons (I think where there is a nail bar today). Further up the hill past the war memorial, but on the same side as Ryders was a small toy shop,

I was brought up in Northwood, my parent lived at 6 Frithwood Avenue. I remember trips to Rhyders, I hated it! My mum would spend ages looking at dress patterns in the basement and I would be bored senseless. I remember Sainsbury's and Cullens as grocers in the main street, then Bishops the supermarket started around the back of the new Rheindeer pub(my big sisters downfall). My favorite shops were Soman Sports to buy your Airfix kits and the local cake shop, whose name I can't remember, next to the hardware shop, Carters I think, my Dad's favourite.
