More about this scene

This view of the deserted village square shows the castle in the distance and Ye Old White Hart Inn, the white-walled building on the right. Orford was a prosperous medieval port which declined as the shingle spit of Orford Ness grew, which gradually cut it off from the sea. Orford Castle, the most impressive medieval building on the Suffolk coast, was built by Henry II in 1165, and shows the importance of the port to the realm at the time. Although now only the great circular keep remains today, this view shows the remains of the other earthworks and walls which once protected it.
