My Early Memories

A Memory of Sacriston.

My name is John Howard Jackson,I was born at 22 John street Sacriston on 16 6 1946..we moved to heugh edge house for a few years then onto 6 south view until I left home to take up an engineering apprenticeship with the national coal board in the midlands.my main memories are of a happy but austere childhood as my parents had five kids so money was tight.
I went to Sacriston secondary modern school..Peter waughs off license and shop was at the bottom of our street ...
My first week at work was at the team valley trading estate,Gateshead in the John Barron clothing factory, came home one day in the first week to see the institute burning down...was going into Richardsons shop to buy sweets when the institute clock fell into the ruined building with an almighty crash.
I also remember the sacristy house on the tops being demolished...the adults used to try to keep us kids away by telling us about the giant rats that lived there...
I often think about my growing up there, anyone remember me.?..cheers,Howard..

My parents live in Witton Gilbert, but my great grandparents and other ancestors were born in Sacriston, and on King Street. I’d be interested to hear from anybody that had any information on members of the Dodds or Wilkinson families!
