This sizeable village nestles in a valley close to two notable landmarks: Lewesdon Hill (894 feet) and Pilsdon Pen, at
909 feet, the highest hill in Dorset.
West Dorset's medieval seamark on a conical hill above the Chesil Beach was retained after the closure of Abbotsbury Abbey in 1539, and repaired in 1742.
Here the photographer looks north-west from near the hillfort that occupies the crest
of the ridge, towards Poynings village and the scarp of the South Downs beyond at North Hill and Newtimber Hill.
Postbridge takes its name from the arched
bridge that was built to carry the post
road from Princetown in the south-west to
Moretonhampstead in the north-east.
This is a general view of Kendal from the south, with the Lakeland hills
in the background.The town of Kendal was founded on the west bank
of the River Kent, although the earliest settlement around
St John's Church, built in 1858-9 by Morphew & Green and with its west gable-end facing out onto the road junction, dominates this cross-roads towards the top of the hill.
