More about this scene
Seaton Sluice is a small natural harbour once known as Hartley Harbour. A problem with silting was tackled by Sir Ralph Delaval in the early 1670s. He built a pier and arranged for sea water to be trapped behind a sluice at each high tide. At low tide the sluice was opened and the harbour flushed: hence Seaton Sluice.
