The Bull & Tiger Pub

A Memory of Borehamwood.

Does anyone remember ‘The Bull & Tiger Pub’ in Ripon Way it was built in 1958. It once stood perched on a hilltop in an oasis of grass in the middle of a large housing estate. The manager was Tommy Staunton and his wife Eileen who were in charge for a period of eleven years. In that time they had made the ‘Bull & Tiger’ in the community a real focal point. Tommy and Eileen’s warm friendly welcome always and embraced regulars and newcomers alike and the pub was a centre for all manner of activities. Although in the later years it had changed its name to ‘The Directors Arms’ but was no match for the original, sadly in between 2019-20 it was demolished! This pub holds many happy memories for me and I dare say many of you who remember it and going there for a pint or two!

Victor: I lived at 43 Thornbury Gdns and used to get beer for my dad in the 50/60's ( as you could in those days), money on the bottles paid for crisps. I also delivered papers out of Martins Newsagents and attended Furzehill & Holmshill Schools. We left in 1964 for Aussie where I now live in Melbourne.
Hello Rob, good day! Thank you for reading and replying to my memory of The Bull & Tiger pub it's really appreciated. Since you immigrated from the England in 1964 you can appreciate that there has been many changes to our dear little town; the best years were when you were living there in the 50s & 60s. Take care and all the best mate,
Good day Sir! I fondly remember The Bull and Tiger. My grandparents lived in Borehamwood, on Ripon Way, and my Aunt and cousin lived around the way on Easton Garden. My grandparents worried when my cousin, friends, and I would go to the B&T because they though it was a bit rough, but we always had a good time visiting. my last visit was in 1983. Best to you, and may God Save the King
Hello Victor
I lived next door to the Bull and Tiger at Bevan House from 1964 - 1971, I used to do penny for the guy quite late and all the blokes coming out after a few sherbets were very generous. Used to get cream soda at the off license. Good times back then. Still went back years later once old enough. Best Martin
