Nostalgic memories of Hornsey's local history

Share your own memories of Hornsey and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I came into this world in 1952 at the Alexandra Nursing Home in Muswell Hill. I lived in St Mary's Road off the High Street until 1960 when we moved to Hawthorn Road where I lived until 1974. My dad (Pete McCafferty) used to drink in The Hornsey Tavern. Mum (Vi) worked at The Hornsey Journal until I was born. I went to Rokesly Infants and Junior Schools and then to Clemence Cave. I remember playing in the ...see more
I was born in 117 Blyth Mansions, Hornsey Rise, in 1942 I think they had just been built. I remember playing in the flats with so many children, I wonder where they are all now. We used to have fights with all the other flats, Hill Rise, Laydon, Colman Mansions and 2 others but they were we classed as posh. Also the wooden bridge and all the alleyways. I went to Duncombe Rd School, and the Isledon, which was at ...see more
My parents, Bill and Jill Oliver met at Mountview theatre club in the 1950s and married in 1955. Their first home was a rented flat at 45 Ridge Road in Hornsey and both I and my sister Judy were born while they lived there with their cat Sylvester. Our back garden backed on to Stationers School and we had a great time playing in that garden where my dad put a swing up for us. I ...see more

I was born in 1944 and have a very clear memory of living at 37 Coleraine Road in Hornsey and, at the age of 7 1/2 emigrated with my parents, John and Ena Ridley to New Zealand. We lived with my father's parents and they continued living there until 1972 when my grandfather died. I have been back to visit once and hope to do so again in the not too distant future. I ...see more
I lived in 57 Avenue Road just off Crouch End Hill. I lived with my mother, father, sister Pamela and brother Gerald in two rooms. My brother was 7, my sister 12 and myself, 14. There were 6 families living in this house. Mum cooked on a stove literally in a cupboard. One bathroom was shared by all families. There was an outbreak of polio in the house which two families contracted. ...see more
I was brought up in Hornsey from 1964 to 1972. We moved from Hornsey when they had to replace our road with new homes and eventually a senior school which I attended when it first opened in 1980, joining St Davids all boys from Hornsey High Street and St Katherines from Pretoia Road, Tottenham. I went to Roskley Infants and Juniors. It was great back then, in the days Hornsey was a very quiet place to live. ...see more
I was brought up in Williams Close in Crescent Road in 1962-1983. At top our road there was a old gothic house which I was looked after in as a four year old by a lovley lady called Mrs Murphy. I always felt uneasy in that house, it had a bad feel about it. As the years rolled by the gothic house was left empty; at night time that house looked way scary. One summers day me and my ...see more
I was born in Muswell Hill in 1960 and lived in Hampden Road. I went to Nursery and Primary School at Hollickwood School in Sydney Road. Spent many happy hours as I grew up sampling all the different ice cream flavours in Maude's Ice Cream parlour nearby! As kids, we would also dare each other to run through the Bus Garage without being seen and to try and sneak on a bus whilst it was being washed! I ...see more
I worked as a telegram messenger at the post office in Tottenham Lane. We delivered telegrams on 250cc BSA motorcycles which covered Highgate Village. We used to go to the British Restuarant opposite Rokerly School & the YMCA building. I remember the V1 and V2 bombs dropping during the day time. I lived at Tivoli Rd, and remember a V2 landing in Palace Rd. I met my wife at a dance in Hornsey ...see more
