More about this scene

South of Ollerton is Rufford Country Park, run by the County Council. The abbey was founded in 1136; it was converted into a house and further enlarged in the 17th century by the Savile family. It was bought by the County Council as a crumbling ruin; the large early 18th-century block at the left was demolished in 1956. Much of the remainder is roofless, but restored and consolidated; the Country Park was opened in 1969, and very popular it is too, with a café and shops in the nearby stable block.
