More about this scene

On 28 September 1066 William, Duke of Normandy, landed here and occupied the long-abandoned Roman for- tress, which then occupied a promontory overlooking open sea. From here he moved to the place now known as Battle, and conquered England by defeating King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. In fact, the viewpoint here was in the sea until medieval times.
