Share your own memories of South Harrow and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I lived at 61 Eastcote Ave from 1942 when I was born. I went to Welldon Park primary school and helped Mr Goodhead count the dinner money each day. I also joined Mr Locks woodwork group after school, this was special as you had to be chosen. I failed my 11plus, my mother arranged for me to go to St Thomas's school in Stanmore. When not at school, me and my friends would spend time in Roxeth Park, later going ...see more
Does anyone remember Alma Road and Alma crescent? It has been built over now, it was at the bottom of the rise to the top of Northolt Road. At the top of Alma Road was the Harrow on the Hill laundry. Opposite the road was The Three Horseshoes Pub which is no more......I do have pictures of the road with my mates standing around, and a picture of a street party for the Queen in 1953. My dad worked in the Gas works ...see more
I worked as a Saturday boy in Arthur Gardiners in the mid 1970's. Across the road was a dry cleaners run by a guy called Rudi, who employed a beautiful blond girl called Lisa, who also worked Saturday. On the corner between the shop and Woolies was a green grocer who used to spend all day shouting out his prices. There was a cake shop called Garners where we used to get cream cakes to have with our ...see more
I lived in Reading Road which is Northolt but I remember so well South Harrow. I went to Guides and was married in the baptist church in South Harrow. I worked Saturdays in a chemist next to Vickers, the hardware shop. I had to serve french letters and put them in a plain brown bag, I was 13 at the time I was so embarrassed! I remember South Harrow market and the record stall 6/6d for a 45. I want a picture of ...see more
My family moved to Arundel Drive when I was a baby. Like most of the houses we had a shared drive where you couldn't access the garage. I remember this caused a lot of problems with the neighbours. Have just returned from a reminiscing trip having not been back there for 40 years. What a shame South Harrow has been so neglected over the years - very sad. Does anyone remember the play area in Alexandra Park ...see more
I lived in South Harrow from birth in 1945 in 125 Roxeth Green Avenue. I attended Roxeth Hill primary school until failing the eleven plus and then went to Lascelles Secondary Modern. Not the best of pupils although I was in the A stream. Hated school and was caned all the time or was in the corridor for my sins. I just wanted to work and had a few jobs; paper rounds, helping the milkman and working in ...see more
I lodged at eight Parkfield Road with my father who worked at Perivale during & after the war. I was an apprentice at F J Creamer at Stanmore. The house was owned by Mr & Mrs Wade who had an adopted son called Fred, who was an apprentice to Young Austin & Young. After doing my national service I came back & then worked at the Post Office Workshops off Yeading lane. I married a young girl who lived ...see more
I moved to Harrow in 1969, and started DJ'ing in October 1969. I had a residency at The Shaftesbury every Thursday, Friday, Sunday lunchtime and then later in the evening (pubs closed at 3pm in those days). It was very busy there, so the brewery came along and said they'd build a Birds Nest Disco - and within months it was up! They asked me to run the DJ's but offered me silly money, so I refused, ...see more
In 1975, when I set up my own business, I'm a commercial property surveyor, I rented an office building at 503 Northolt Road. (I think my landlord may've been a director of Harrow Building Society if I remember correctly. On the front of the building, I put up a wooden sign to call it "Lever House" - I think the building is occupied by solicitors nowadays, but it may still be called Lever ...see more
I remember many happy time in the area. Did you live in the house on the corner of Abercorn Crescent? Your name sounds familiar and I used to play in that garden sometimes. I lived at 111 RGA (the house just before the railway bridge)until late 1967, and used to hang around with some lads who lived between our two houses, Paul Todd, Ian Kimmis, and David Smith, playing in the old orchards at the disused ...see more
