Nostalgic memories of Tranmere's local history

Share your own memories of Tranmere and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My nan lived in Brougham Street and her mother lived next door. I remember playing alleys in the gutter, split the kipper, taking a jam jar in exchange for a ride on the roundabout, the Sally army marching along the streets, the corner shop selling Uncle Joe's mint balls, taking an old medicine bottle of water and a pickled onion butty to the park, playing on the bomb sites and Dr Pugh.
I remember being aged 3yrs and my mum would walk me down to butterworths grocery shop and let me walking on my own with a huge straw shopping bag and shopping list..the lady in there, Mrs butterworths I assume would play along and fill my bag with shopping...we lived close by in lever terrace which is still there. Does anybody remember butterworths? I was so young but I remember it so clearly.
I was born in 1937 in the black and white house opposite the top of North Road and on the corner of Elm Road and Greenway Road. Because it was a crosswords, there were often crashes occuring because cars came up Derby Road too fast and it had a blind corner. I remember the post office next door with Mr and Mrs Newton and their son John who went to Art School and became an artist. I often wonder what became of ...see more
Hi, many times I walked though Victoria Park to the Regent with my Mum - we both loved it. You could always see the screen - a B movie and then main movie, what happy times...I remember the Collosium in Tranmere, we used to call it then 'The Flea Pit'. In Rock Ferry there was the the Palace also. And of course, in Bikenhead there was the posh Ritz. I also remember the Plaza well. Happy Memories, Charles Cotton.
I was born in St Catherine's Hospital during 1943 and spent the next 22 years living right across the street from it until I emigrated to Canada in 1965. I can remember my mother, my sister and I walking along Derby Road with the empty pram to pick up a bag of coal (in the days of rationing)! The corner shop was Morris's just at the bottom of the hill near North Road - we used to go there for a llb of ...see more
I grew up in Oriel Road in Lower Tranmere. My nan lived across the road from us. When I was 5 (1951) she had a stroke and my mum spent the next 5 years looking after her until she died, when I was about 10. In those days, there was a Salvation Army place at the bottom of Oriel Road and I remember when we had a street party for the Queen's Coronation, the Salvation Army lent the trestle tables which were put ...see more
