Nostalgic memories of West Monkton's local history

Share your own memories of West Monkton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Tips & Ideas

Not sure what to write? It's easy - just think of a place that brings back a memory for you and write about:

  • How the location features in your personal history?
  • The memories this place inspires for you?
  • Stories about the community, its history and people?
  • People who were particularly kind or influenced your time in the community.
  • Has it changed over the years?
  • How does it feel, seeing these places again, as they used to look?

I spent most of my childhood living at Brean West Monkton and recently was reminiscing with my brother Jeremy Bicknell (who now lives in New Zealand) about our visits to the village Post Office and the services of Mrs Marsh. I also remember that Gilly Channon (as she then was) used to help look after my brother and I when we were small (although she was only a few years older than us) during my ...see more
My name is Pamela Ross, I live in Leicestershire, 40 years ago, i went hiking around the area of Taunton, with my future husband and his friend, after getting off the train, and walking for some time, it was getting dusk and we were walking along a country lane, when we had a car pull up next to us, it may have been a mini, (probably red) this chap asked what we were doing and if we needed somewhere to stay, we ...see more
I can remember going to the shop almost everyday (I was born in 1967) with my mother, Gillian Boyland (nee Channon). I used to sit on the steps opposite where a lady by the name of Mrs Gill used to live. Mrs Marsh was the postmistress, and my mother knew her well. My mother was born in 1938 at Titley Cottages in West Monkton, where she still lives today! I can remember 'Dot' who also worked in the shop and the long ...see more
I lived here from around 1952 until the late 1960s with my parents RF and WM Marsh who ran the Post Office and Stores. My father used to deliver groceries to customers over quite a wide area, some of whom lived in Coombe (in another photo) and some lived across fields further into the hills where geese used to try to attack the car wheels! My father passed away at home in 1974 and my mother kept the shop ...see more
I lived with my family in this house for a few months when we first arrived in England from Northern Ireland, it was being renovated by one "Gassy" Harris and was full of the smell of sawn timber. A few years back I revisited the house briefly and met with someone who I think was doing some temporary gardning, though his main profession was thatching, and had worked on that very renovation; now I have lost his ...see more
