More about this scene
For centuries the Ouse had been used to transport people and goods in and out of the city. In the mid-1830s there was even a steamer service linking York with London. The journey took over thirty hours, and was an acceptable alternative to being shaken and bounced along the Great North Road in a mail-coach.
