My Happy Childhood In Berkhamsted.
A Memory of Berkhamsted.
I was born at the Grange Nursing Home in Berkhamsted on November 19th, 1950.
My parents were John and Marjorie Stanborough, my father was a school teacher at Park View School which later reverted to Westfield. We lived on the Durrants Estate in Ashridge Rise and I have lovely memories of playing with my friends there, having picnics in Ross Way and playing rounders on the green.
Sometimes we would play in East Meadow, too. Wonder where those friends are now? Vivien ( nee) Moore our next door neighbour, who became a missionary in Uganda and Cheryl, Lesley, and Julie (nee) Bird.Deborah (nee) Pratt.
I went to my Dad's school to begin with then Berkhamsted Girls Grammar School, which meant that I could spend more time at Grandma's in Doctors Commons Road during lunch times.
The highlight of my time there was the Visit of HRH Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who came to open the new dining wing. We were very excited and had learned to curtsey.
I remember taking part in the Berkhamsted Pageant, as well.
We moved to Potten End in 1965 and my first job in 1967 was at Adams travel, next to the Rex Cinema. I made friends with a lady called Veronica and a new neighbour, Maxine (nee) Rylett. In fact I stayed in the area until my marriage to Ron in 1972 when we moved to Boxmoor, then Kings Langley and Wilstone.
Now we are both semi-retired and living in Wingrave. But Berkhamsted will always have a special place in my heart.
Pauline Askey (nee) Stanborough.

I have been looking online for photos of Park View School, without success, but have come across your memories post. I was in your Dad's class in 1951-52!
Do you have any photos of the school which you could share?
Thanks
Michael Mobbs
He, unfortunately passed away in 1998 aged 81 years.
He often spoke about Park View in fact I went there myself between 1955 and 1957.
Do you remember any of the other teachers?
I remember Mrs. Sternwald, Mrs. Hum, Mrs, Branson, Mr. Kerrison, Mr. Parker and Mr. Tidy.
Were you there when Mr. Robinson was there?
I am sure that if you were to get in touch with the new school in Durrants Lane they would have some records - worth a try?
Kind Regards.
