Old Teacher At Martock C Of E Primary Scool

A Memory of Bower Hinton.

Hullo, Martock and Bower Hintoners of 1962!
My name is Richard James. Currently I am 86 and still ‘ with it’ , I like to think. The happiest teaching year of my whole life was at Martock, and I was the very first occupant of 79 Bower Hinton which had been bought and rebuilt by Jack Boon in 1960. I used to bike on my wife’s bike, to the school everyday. The Head Teacher was George Barron, and his wife Mary also taught there. My monthly pay was £27, yet with a monthly mortgage payment of £7 ten&ninepence, I couldn’t afford to stay longerthan 12 months.
If any old pupil from 1960-2 has any memories of those years, I would love them to get in touch with me by email at
bimbury1936@gmail.com. I now live in Australia, and I still keep in touch w many old students from my many teaching years..
At one time I was roped into being secretary of the Martock Cricket Club (MCC!), and played for one of their lesser teams, without much distinction. I think we used to field up to four teams in those days. My heart has lived in Bower Hinton and Martock ever since. Dr Parker kindly lent me an old barn to keep my old car from rotting away (even further) during the Winter, and I put a new roof on it while it was in that barn.
Most wonderful days, those were!
Richard (Dick) James.
