More about this scene

This quiet resort takes its name from the salterns or salt pans used by the monks from the nearby Otterton Priory. Budleigh's long beach is made up of millions of large pebbles, or 'pobbles', as they are known locally. Its lack of sand might be the reason that it did not develop as a traditional family resort, but rather as a refined watering place much loved by residents and visitors, who return year after year.

I still have fond memories of Budleigh, particulary down on the beach when the fishing boats came in. I recall times when I would ...see more
My memory of Budleigh Salterton is spending a couple of months or so at a childrens convalescent home in the spring/early summer of 1955. I revisited the town a few years back to find that the old childrens home building is now a hotel and named Tidwell Manor. I was 6 years old, recovering from meningitis and to find myself in such a wonderous and tranquil part of the world was quite truly ...see more
