Life In Cadley In The 1950s

A Memory of Cadley.

No electricity, outside toilet, built in copper in the kitchen. All cooking was done on a coal fired oven that also heated the kitchen. The kitchen was the main room in the house, parlour (lounge) was only used at Xmas. My worst memories are of me running through the houses to the toilet, not very nice. The water was supplied by a tap outside by the front door freezing up in the winter. Freezing cold bedrooms. I remember when the electricity was laid on in the village and there was only light sockets, no wall sockets - didn't matter though - we couldn't afford appliances.
Mums first quarterly bill for electric was 10 shillings (50p). But in a strange way we were happy as children, freedom to roam and play where we wanted. There is, in a strange way, something good about that. Anthony Goodson.
