More about this scene

Dating from the 13th century, the castle is not just a monument in stone. Equally impressive are its sophisticated water defences, which, together with a formidable concentric walls-within-walls plan, must have made any attack a daunting prospect. A walk around the ruins requires a good deal of imagination, as so little is left. It is actually in better shape now than when this picture was taken; it has been landscaped to remove centuries of growth.

Dowding's Estate Agents Cardiff Road
My father purchased the Dowdings Estate Agency, I think possibly from the owner Mr William Dowding, in 1955. The original building, built circa 1900, was then sold to Lloyd's Bank when my father's business closed down in the mid 1980's. They originally rented just the ground floor and subsequently knocked the original building down and replaced it with the current building which they now occupy completely.

Caerphilly
I used to live in Bartlett Street next to the bus station. My first job in Caerphilly was as a delivery driver for Harris & Ash DIY merchants, they were situated in a double fronted shop opposite the castle, although I came across a photograph recently that showed their shop as originally opposite the bus and railway station. I Was Born In Caerphilly In 1938
I left Caerphilly in 1955 to join the Royal Airforce. Prior to this I worked for AJ Marshall Wholesale Confectioners in Castle Street. I went to school at The Twyn Secondary Modern as it was then known. I remember coming on leave and having a few pints in the Clives Hotel, on leaving I took the short cut to Nantgarw Road via the Castle fields but unkown to me the moat had been filled so needless ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
