Warwickshire memories
Charles E Gardner(Chas)- The Woodturner of Stockton.
I remember my great grandfather so well, I feel I could pen a book in relation to his life. He holds so many memories to me that are so very precious and times I wish I could have back again, what a wonderful gent he was. Many, many years ago before my birth, he bought a piece of land in Stockton from a certain Lord in the locality. And subsequently decided to build two bungalows, one for himself and his wife Hilda May and one for his daughter Brenda and his to be son in law Alfred John Fitchett, which they began building in 1959. Chas, as he was known, used to work for Nelson Cement Works up Calley as it used to be known. Until I believe he suffered an injury or back problems. So he decided to build himself a Lathe from an old car gearbox and odds n sods, and began to make egg cups,working miniature mills, roundabouts etc. He used to show all his wood at the... Read more
School Days
I remember attending the village school opposite Holy Trinity Church of which I was a chior boy for a few years. We had a local football team made up of choristors - we were very good. I lived at the bottom of the village in New Row (now demolished) we had an outside pump to supply us with water with the rest of the row. The tiolet was at the bottom of the garden near the chicken hutch. Not a good trip on a winters night. My father worked in Leamington Spa at Fords foundary. He cycled to work and back in all weathers a round trip of 15 miles a day. Our school headmaster was Archie Payne helped by his wife and they both lived in the school house attached to the school. Great times.
Growing up Fun!
My memory year was at Willoughby Charity Church of England School, where I remember all the friends I used to live with and went to the same school with. It was good fun,growing up days! Long hot summers, having to find things to do - one week it was making bows and arrows, then conkers, then catching newts in the pond in the field, going A.W.O.L across the fields and not coming back for hours, then in later years buying my first moped and riding for days up on the old railway with my best mate Colin Miller. Oh such memories!
Old Vicarage
My first memory of Willoughby I think was during the 1980s, it was when David Sole of 'Starsky and Hutch' fame rented the Old Vicarage for a stay in England - it was a Saturday night and he had invited villagers to a party that he was holding. As I didn't live in the village at that time I obviously wasn't invited, but I do remember the feeling of excitment, and I did see a video of him and his guests going along Lower Street, Willoughby. I'm sure some residents who live in Willoughby will have clearer memories of the party than me, there must be some residents who actually went to the party.
Markham's of Bascote
My husbands family were from Bascote. His ancestor Edwin Markham moved there as an ag labourer in the 1870s. His wife Maria died shortly after, and he married again. He had very many children, and used to drink at the Fox and Hen pub - the landlords were witnesses at his wedding! Sadly his cottage, by the pub, has been demolished, but his children all stayed local to Bascote when they grew up; one of his sons died in the Great War, and is named on the Bascote Heath memorial.
Kings Cottage
Whilst at Priors Marston my grandfather, Rowland Joseph Marsh and his wife Annie Elizabeth Lavender had twins: Leonard and Vera Marsh. They already had a daughter Kathleen Annie. I am the eldest daughter of Kath Marsh, who is still alive, as is Vera. Unfortunatly Len died a few years ago. The Parish Council were very good in sending me some details of Priors Marston which looks a lovely village and the people there must be very nice as well!
It would be lovely if anyone has any memories that go back this far and to hear from them.

The Southam Family
My great-grandfather William Southam was born in 1829 in Catesby in Northamptonshire. He married Eliza Green, born Wormleighton, Warks. They lived in Ladbroke, Warks, in a cottage next to the School House that still exists but is now a private house. They had children: William 1857, Elizabeth 1860, Mary Matilda 1863, Albert 1870 and George 1870 (Ttwins), and Frederick 1873.
