Peggy Leggy Steps

A Memory of Canning Town.

Peggy Leggy Steps! I remember my mother used to talk of these steps, over the railway line in the East End. When she was a kid, she was told not to have anything to do with the boys from over the Peggy Leggy Steps as that was, apparently, the wrong side of town! Needless to say, she married a sailor from the wrong side of town and had 4 kids!

I lived in Clarence Road when I was young (this was 1954-65) in a house in a terrace which was demolished some time ago. I was allowed to roam quite freely (as kids were in those days) but Peggy Leggy steps was a boundary I was not supposed to cross. Going over Peggy Leggy steps you could get to what we called the 'sewer bank' but which must have been the Bow Creek and the River Lee. This was pretty horrible and the sight of rats was not uncommon.
