Very Kind Family

A Memory of Cefn Hengoed.

I was an evacuee to Cefn |Hengoed, My mother said that |I was 6weeks old when we got there and I was born beginning of November 1940. I understand that after being placed with different families we finished living with Mr & Mrs B Evans 71 Derwendeg Avenue. Bertha and Bert had at least 1 boy and I think 2 girls in their family living there as well so I think it must have been quite crowded. I know that I spent many years after the war on holidays with them and at one time even went to Derwendeg school when I had been convelesing from Pneumonia. I can rememeber the good times we had playing in the woods. WE would be out all day long. I can remember the Jazz band that paraded around the village and Bert used be involved with that. They used to go to competitions which we followed.
When I was on holiday I was sent to Chapel which was in Geligar road the good thing about that was the outings we went on to Barry Island ans Porth Cawl. When we went to cinema we would walk down to Yystrd which was ok going down but not so good coming back up the hill,
I can remember being in the village when the Councillor had got a TV and we watched either the Queens wedding or it may have been the Coronation, The co-op van used come round, but at the top of the road was a small shop that sold everything and was the postoffice and I think there was a butchers there as well. I know that when I arrived on holiday Mrs Evans had to have my ration coupons. A couple of doors from 71 there was a hut where we could get chips I think that was Mr Price. Mrs & Mr Price and Mr Evans were all on in the St Johns Ambulance. Such wonderful memories of that place. I know that both the girls got married about 1956 and one moved into Lansbury Aveneu and had a couple of children there names Nina and John and there may have another but not sure.
