Coffee And Doughnuts
A friend from work, and I took courses at the Neath Technical Institute. I left Swansea about 7:30am, and had to run down Mount Pleasant to the bus station in order to get to the Institute. For lunch we walked up town to a little Italian cafe and had a doughnut and coffee for lunch. After afternoon classes we went back to the cafe and had - another doughnut and coffee. We didn't have much money at that time. After evening classes I caught the 10:00pm bus home to Swansea and walked back up Mount Pleasant. This was a really steep hill and at one point the bus going up would change gear and I was enveloped in a cloud of black smoke - I can still smell it. I look back and wonder how we managed all this running and climbing on a really poor diet but I guess it didn't do us any harm.
Neath - William Phillips Family
I live in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. My relative, William Phillips was born in Neath and lived at 14 Company Street, Llantwit Fardre. He was a collier. He married 6/1875 Rachel Thomas (b.18/7/1852 Pontypridd Llaneth Verdre).In 1886 he and his family emigrated to Australia and settled in Stockton, NSW, a suburb of Newcastle. They had 9 children. He was a co-founder of the Stockton Congregational Church in 1887 along with Hopkin Bevan. He worked as a collier at the Stockton Colliery and was one of the last of the rescue party to emerge from mine after the disaster in 1896. He died in Stockton in aged 58 in 1910. His wife Rachel died aged 81 in 1934. William's parents were David and Margaret Phillips. Rachel's parents were Enoch Thomas and Mary Lewis. I'm looking for Margaret d.o.b Nov 1949 [could be known as Gaynor] Jones and Patricia L Davies d.o.b Nov 1949, both born in Neath and lived in God rer Graig. Patricia's married name could either be Jones or Thomas and she married in 1967 in Neath. Do You Know Lilla Allan/Bryant
I am looking for my paternal grandmother or her relatives. Her name is Lilla Allan (nee Bryant). She was married to my grandad Haydon Fraser Allan who owned Allans Bakery at 147 Windsor Road in Neath. They married in 1928, had my dad Peter Allan, but divorced in 1938. She had 2 brothers who worked at Coney Beach in Porthcawl. Their surname was Bryant. I know she went on to have at least 2 or 3 daughters in her next relationship. One of them was married in either Swansea or Newport and could have been called Elizabeth. After that I cannot trace her. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.
Empire Cinema Neath
Hi, to everyone who reads this and I hope some of you can help. My Mum, met my Dad, in the Empire Cinema Neath, 60 years ago this year. She used to work there with her father (my Grandfather). Over the years she has so many stories to tell, and as I was growing up I heard the stories over and over. For example, the Neath born actor Ray Milland's father used to go there to watch his son's films and always had a complimentary cup of tea. My Mum, would always chat to him. Sadly, the Empire Neath is now going to be turned into flats. Ideally, we would love to find a developer, or a group, or individual, who would want to invest to save this building and turn it into a bowling alley/multi purpose complex or something worthwhile, to bring something to Neath. Tracing Residents From Briton Ferry From The Early 1970s
I am trying to contact former residents of Briton Ferry, the Whiffen family. They lived on the now demolished street 'Lys yr Ynys' in the early 1970s.
I am not sure if anyone will know of this family or where they moved to. I am particularly keen to get in touch with Margaret May Whiffen.
Any help with these matters would be very much appreciated.

My Cilybebyll Youth
I was brought up in my youth by my father's brother Rees Emmanuel and his wife Erica, most of my own family having been killed in an air raid in Pontrhydyfen on 11/5/1941. We had lived in Trelewis and Bedlinog and came to Cilybebyll in about 1946,my uncle being the Rector there. They also had a daughter Sonia ,born when we lived in Bedlinog. Our life there was very much linked to the church of course but as the only teenager in the hamlet I sometimes felt a bit lonely. The beautiful countryside along with my 3/4 size bike were my best friends. I attended Ystalyfera Grammar School and even played one game of Rugby for the Swansea Valley Schoolboy team!!!
I have lived in New Zealand for almost 48 years but my time in Cilybebyll will always be a precious memory.
