Pallister Road is the impressive Bank Building built in 1899 to house the London & County Bank as well as a number of shops, including the Home and Colonial Stores. As Clacton-on-Sea grew the justification for an independent local authority also grew. At a special meeting held in September 1890 the town agreed to petition for the creation of a Local Board of Health, the forerunner of the local council. After an enquiry Essex County Council duly authorised the new Board which came into being as the Great Clacton Local Board on 17 June 1891. Its powers covered draining, lighting, paving, approval of new roads and buildings, sanitary inspection and powers to acquire and maintain parks and pleasure grounds.

The Clacton Donkies
Yes name was Norah Cleghorn, and we lived next to her mother in Burrs Road in the early 1950s. Nora was well known for bringing the Donkies along West Road from Jaywick for their daily ride home by the now Martello Restaurant. The children used to run along with the donkies every day, and some helping with the rides. Nora died a few years ago.

Happy Days
I was born in Clacton in 1953 along with my twin Brother. We spent most of our time down by the sea because my Dad worked at Butlins around 1960. My uncles worked on the Pier and my Nan worked in the Arcadeds and we also had an Uncle taking tourist photos along the Beach. I remember many times watching Punch and Judy. Our family names are Box, Elgood,and Mudd. Yours Truely Billy Elgood. ( now living in London. )

Please Help
I'm desperately looking for any old photos of 3 places in Clacton. There used to be a toy shop next to the odeon cinema in west ave it was tiny, in ty e 70s. My Nan run a hot dog stall pitched outside reg brown's pub that's now Tom peppers, this would of been in the 70s or late 60s. the old police station in Jackson road. If anyone has any info please let me know. Thahkyou

My Upbringing In Clacton On Sea. From 1947 To 1957
My family of 3 brothers and 3 sisters were brought up in Dr Banardoes Homes in Old Road. I often went to the beach along with 9 other boys and Matron, Miss Blomfield from our cottage, Suffolk. We enjoyed many a happy time on the pier and beach. I have a photo of us 9 boys at the base of some steps near the bridge. I left Clacton in 1957

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
