More about this scene

Further north-east along the High Street, Frith's photographer now looks back in the Clapham Common direction past Cato Road (left). To the far left is a curious building with a huge semi-circular pediment. Now occupied by Moxley Architects, it was built as the Temperance and Billiard Hall in about 1900. At this end of the High Street many houses survive; those on the right have single-storey shops in front.

I was born in 1936 in Henley Street, got bombed out and moved to to my Nan's just round the corner in Blondel Street. At the end of the war our old house in Henley Street was restored and we moved back in. I have many memories of the war, going to Latchmere School, the air-raid shelters, the bombs and of course the 'doodle bugs'. I progressed to Surrey Lane School where a lovely lady teacher, Mrs ...see more
