A Memory of Crewe.

My dad was an apprentice instructor at Crewe works. He worked there from it opening in the 1950s until it closed in the 70s. He was a fitter, and I have read various recollections of him. He was said to be "firm but fair" and another that he was remembered for his Brylcream. He passed away peacefully in Sept 2017 aged 95 despite being a heavy smoker, diabetic and having worked with blue asbestos in the fabrication shops at the works. He lived in Crewe until he was 90, when failing health meant he came to live near to me in Hampshire.

I think your Mum Mary was my mums cousin. Was your granny Lucy and Grandad Wilf. My name was Pat Baker.
Yes. I think they lived near Hightown. Wilf was a crane driver in the Works up in the smoke and dust of the roof of the workshop. Mary worked in a shop before she married my Dad- I don’t know which one. She sang and played the piano even though she couldn’t read music. I think she was in the church choir.
