Croydon Jazz Club

A Memory of Croydon.

Does anyone remember The Star Hotel at Broad Green and the Jazz club in the back room run by Frank Getgood and Nobby?
I started going there every Friday night from 1959. They were great times and many great bands played there in the Trad Jazz revival years. Ken Colyer, Sandy Brown, Alex Welsh, Mike Daniels, Humph, Ken Simms, Alan Elsdon etc.
I can clearly remember singing "Walking with the king" with Colyer, much to his annoyance, I wouldn't give him the microphone back.
I first met my still good friend Bryan Anscomb there. He is the only one I'm still in touch with.
What happened to Mick Ladkin, Mark Abrahams, Pam Hart, Susan Fawdrey, Valerie Cherry etc
Those Fridays were the highlight of my week in my teen years. Bryan and I were particularly outrageous in our behaviour in those days. We were often thought brothers as we were joined at the hip.
Anyone remember those happy days and did we ever meet?

I remember attending the Jazz Club with my friend Mig, we wore short check skirt with a long black jumpers borrowed from my dad. We thought we were so cool. Does any one remember the coffee bar in Park Street opposite the Town Hall ther was Kenny and Ben I think and it was owned by the Glazer family., I spent many happy hours in there studying, and worked in the Children's Dept at the County Hall I left in 1963 after getting married and having my first child. Happy happy days.
If you went to the Croydon Jazz Club at the Star Hotel often between 1959-1965 I probably knew you.
I can remember going to the coffee bar you mention too.
During some of those years I used to man the CND stall outside The Whitgift in the high st.
I used to wear the usual duffle coat, jeans and Jesus sandals.
I knew most of the patrons of the club so it’s highly likely we did meet in those glory days
