Nostalgic memories of Darlington's local history

Share your own memories of Darlington and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Darlington and then moved to Hartlepool as my dad started working in the steel works there. Always had our holidays back in Darlington staying with my granddad or with other relations.
I was born at number 15 Swan Street before my parents moved next door, No.14. My family had people living all around the area, maternal in Swan Street/ Hargreave and paternal, from Model Place. We had a shop on virtually every corner and of every type within a couple minutes walk. Billy Ramsdales was next to us, a pleasant version of Arkwrights store; opposite was the Chippy and in the 10 ...see more
My memory is very hazy; I went there when I was five and left when I was 14. I remember not being happy at first but at the end I did not want to leave. Love to hear other people's memories.
The view of Post House, Wynd, circa 1965 reminds me of my school days when every school day of the year for seven years I walked up here having bussed from Haughton. Then it was up Duke Street to the grammar school. There was a shop called Northern Surgical Supplies and we used to snigger at the advertisement for Durex in the window. I remember a chocolate shop on the same side as The Dun Cow, which later in life I ...see more
I'd just like to see a picture of this place as I spent many a day there in my youth.
I was born in Darlington in 1952, and lived with parents Jim & Margaret Logan, and my two elder brothers; Peter and Paul. We lived at 46 Fife Road and all attended St. Augustines RC Primary School, Larchfield Street, and then after the Scholarship, up to St. Mary's. My old form master was Mr White and the Headmaster was Father McKenna. The only boys I can remember from my class of 1961 ...see more
Does anyone remember the annual circus that took place in South Park? We used to live in Clifton Road, and I well remember the animal procession going past our house as it made its way to the park, preceded by people playing trumpets etc . I remember particularly the elephants walking past our front door!
A friend is racking her brains trying to remember name of Cafe/Coffee bar frequented by bikers on Victoria Road in a cellar? Possibly Boulevarde ???? Anyone help this girl?
Is this the home for just girls run by nuns? My sister and I where from Hartlepool and were sent to a home in Darlington when my mom had to go into hospital. My two older brothers went to a home in Hartlepool, but they made an exception and let us bring my baby brother with us so I could look after him - he was the only boy. We lived on Millbank Rd in Hartlepool and I always thought there was a Milbank Rd near ...see more
I was born above the Regent Fish and Chip shop in ParkGate, next to what was once the Hippodrome Theatre. It was my Grandad Moody's business, part of a fish and chip empire the Moodys had, with one up in Park Lane and another in North Road. During the war my mum used to put me to bed in the bottom one of a chest of drawers, while Grandad was on top of the theatre manning the searchlights.
