Spitfire
About 1943 - disabled Spitfire landed 30 yards from beach opposite Golden Hind cafe and just beyond hotel on right. 3 or 4 chaps stripped off, swam out and pulled pilot from aircraft. I hope pilot survived but don't know if he did. Does anyone know?

RE: RE: Spitfire
At the time you mention I lived with my father, Phys Piddock, mother , Hannah, brother Peter and baby sisier, Mary, at 4 Duke St. Cyril [?] Bell lived near St. Andrews Hall, opposite Mrs Lonagon's shop, the corner of Nelson St.
A bomb destroyed the High St corner of Alfred Square and shortly after one hit the R.C. school, Queen St. My father and cousin David Smith helped the rescuers. Peter and I were packed off to South Wales. Mr Bell worked for SEEB and was well known to us, as were the Fishlocks, Ronnie Rogers, the McCarthy girls, Mr Erridge in his shop. Many other memories, too. I love this page...
