Arnold/Walters Family In Ealing

A Memory of Ealing.

My father's family lived in Balfour Avenue, Hanwell from 1907/8 onwards. I think my great grandfather possible bought the house for my grandparents wedding present. He was George Arnold, a pawnbroker and jeweller who had shops in Kilburn and Kentish Town. The Kilburn shop, I think, passed on to Teddie Brown, who was a cousin of George. The Brown family also had a shop in Ealing High Road. My grandparents lived in Balfour Avenue all their lives. Grandpa, Arthur Edwin Walters, died from Spanish flu in 1921. Granny lived there until her death in the 1960's. I remember visiting Balfour Avenue on many occasions and particularly walking to the local park where there was a small collection of domestic type animals and birds. I remember catching the trolley bus from Hanwell Broadway toward Uxbridge. George Arnold eventually lived in Gunnersbury Avenue, opposite Ealing Common. The house is now divided into flats
My father his brother and 2 sisters were brought up at Balfour Avenue. I remember my mother, from Northumberland, telling us about being at Balfour Avenue during the blitz and sheltering in the Anderson Shelter in the garden. My Aunty Kathleen lived at Balfour Avenue all of her life and work for Ealing Council.
I gather that they played tennis locally and hockey for Lyndhurst Hockey Club.
My father's grandfather, Edwin Henry Walters lived in Gordon Road,Mount Ave and Kent Gardens between 1890 and 1936.
If anybody has any memories of this family, I would really appreciate hearing them.
Roger Walters
