West Yorkshire memories

Yeadon Old Prize Band

My brother Arthur 2 years my junior and my father Ernest Carter (dec'd 1963)all played for many years with Yeadon old prize band.  We practiced 2 times a week in the old British Legion hut up behind the Yeadon town hall.  Many's the time we ALL had to run to catch the West Yorkshire bus 10pm from Otley to get us to Ravenscliffe Avenue so we could sleep and not be too tired for school the next day.  My first date was with a girl from Yeadon, Dorothy Akers, I was 12/13 years old.  Those were the days.

Family Visit

We lived at Troutback for the summer with the Wells family, a lovely experience.

Living on Pool Bank New Road

We moved to Pool in 1943 as my father had a job as an aircraft inspector at the factory at what is now Leeds & Bradford Airport.
We lived in a house one corner up from the notorious Furze Hill Corner which was a very regular place for serious road accidents. I remember vividly witnessing an accident involving a car carrying some airmen which failed to negotiate the corner and collided with a Samuel Ledgards bus travelling up the hill towards Bradford. I had only just started school at Pool in Wharfedale C of E school and I was walking home with an older girl from the school whose name I believe was Shirley Lee when the accident happened. The corner was sharp , downhill and with an adverse camber which I think all contributed to the accident

My uncle Mr. Fred Wilson was for many years the landlord of The Cross Inn which can be partially seen at the top of the picture. His Alsatian Rinti used to lay down in front of the stocks and stop the traffic.

Ha ha, I remember them times!.. As I remember you, Sharon. We have a page going on Facebook at the moment, talking about old memories and buildings that have gone, but are not forgotten.

Otley Revisited

I'd visited Otley the town in the 1960s, walking and rockclimbing as a lad of 18 /20 with friends I met at work in the woollen mills of Bradford and Shipley. My first memory is of looking down from the Chevin to this beautiful view of Otley. My new girlfriend Rosemary Finn and I had walked from Yeadon one summer evening 1958/9. We were both 16 year olds and enthralled with the view. In 2005 I again visited Otley and the Chevin on a holiday from Australia and found the view more enthralling than the first time I was there, especially as I was there with my mum at 90 years of age, and still going strong. What memories I have of Otley and the Chvin and my home of Yorkshire. I'm coming home again SOON ... I remember all my mates from Hutton secondary school too, do you?? ... and the Yorkshire puddings ...

Grandfather

It's not really memory but a request. I come from Bedlington in Northumberland and have found out my grandfather was born in Otley on 24/03/1901. He was born in 16 Burras Lane. Today I visited with only this scant information and I was fortunate to see it was still as least a street but the house gone, although the church closeby was more than beautiful. Does anyone have any pics of the houses on that lane? Or memories of them ?
