Saturday Morning Pictures Etc

I lived on the border of Belvedere and Erith, just off Parsonage Manor Way and used to travel to Erith by bus.  I remember as a child of about 8-10 taking the 122a into Erith to go to the Odeon, Saturday Morning Pictures.  I seem to remember it was 6d downstairs and 9d upstairs.  I cannot recall what I saw now, but this was an important time for me as it began an interest in cinema which has lasted all my life (so far).  I do have a vague memory of the Famous Five serial which you just couldn't miss an episode of.  Later I would go to the Odeon proper, as it were, to see proper films.  Mind you it was a bit more than the 6d I was used to.

When I left school I worked in the city for a time until I changed my job and took a job in a gents outfitters in Erith.  There were two shops in the town, both owned by... Read more

I lived on High Street from 1959 to 1962 as a child of US Air Force parents. We rented from the Rabies who owned a cute shop (lived upstairs) on High Street. I remember the river was behind our house and because we were almost the last house on the street, the locks were right there! I am planning a trip back to show my husband this adorable town....can anyone give my any updated information? Thank you ever so much, Suzanne..Washington DC

Erith And Belvedere

High Street c1953

I lived in Upper Belvedere from the time I was born until I married 1n 1954. I used to catch the 99 bus from the Eardly Arms pub, on a Saturday morning. to the Ritz cinema in the high street Erith. There was no Odeon then. The only other cinema was a mile or two away at the Pom Pom called the Rialto. The bus fare was 2 pence, 2 pence for the pictures and 2 pence for the journey home The Ritz stood on the corner of the high street. A large cinema, with no upper circle seats A dimly lit screen and muffled sound system. Erith was full of good shops offering a first class service, notably Mitchells of Erith and Woolworths. Later the Ritz was demolished and the Odeon opposite the Prince of wales pub was built. I loved this little cinema, so warm and cosy. It is now a bingo hall. Sadly, Erith was vandalised in the fifties by the developers and this little town... Read more

My Memories

I am now 53. My parents and I moved to Erith from Suffolk in 1967/68. I remember the old Erith pre concrete jungle. I never really let the old town go. The damage the new building did to the town is only known now. It was not a very happy time, but that was not due to Erith. I lived in Springhead Road. Worked 10 years at Simbros, Hailey Road. Got married in Christchurch, Erith. I would like to think my dad was a character in the town. He spent a lot of time in the trades. He used to break cars in the back garden of our house. His name was Eric Meech. He passed away in 1999. Not long after, I broke up with my wife and moved to Folkestone in Kent. Been here about 10 years now. Enjoying the sea and peace. Still think of the town. If only they could have refurbished the old town, I feel the heart of the town would still be there... Read more

My Memoirs Of Erith

I moved into Erith in 1971 to the new riverside flats of Bosworth House. The town was then being constructed and I used to see it grow into the then first stage of the 'concrete jungle'. I used the Erith Trades club and enjoyed many nights in there. We then moved to our first house in Festival Close. They were happy days and we had really first class neighbours. I used to work for Jacobs Biscuits as a HGV Fitter with my father. I would love to hear from anyone that worked there as well. Would love some photos of the place. I drove for Olleys Transport round by Arther Street Flats. That was an interesting time. The stuff you could get out of skips. I moved to away in 1994 to Welling, so I still can see Erith now whenever my travels take me there. Would love to hear from anyone that remembers me.

Erith Shops

I used to work at the Midland Bank in the High Street which was next to the corner carpet shop. When I started there the Bank was just on one shop site but it later expanded to two shop sites. Mr Baker was the Manager who retired in my time there to Broadway in Worcestershire. On the opposite corner set back was Burton's, then Howells and Harrison's the chemist, then a shop that just sold foam upholstery. A little further along was a provisions shop run by a foreign chap who made wonderful sandwiches in an almost robotic way. I always remember the way that he wrapped the sandwich in something like greaseproof paper. Opposite was Boots the chemist and a little further up was Alibars. It was by far my favourite shop for bits and pieces, tools and electrical items including components for making radios. Right at the end of the High Street was the Post Office which I went to most nights to take the Bank's mail.... Read more

Alexandra Road

Born in 60 Alexandra Road in 1943, I went to Crescent Road [Headmistress Mrs Keeble], later to Northumberland Heath School. Walked right down Manor Road just last week round Crescent Road sad to see the school has gone. Such memories as the Ritz cinema in Pier Road, Mitchells store and Pooleys the cycle shop. Beans the butchers at the bottom of Pier Road. Friends of the family remembered are Susan Phillips, Ray Clarke from Springhead Road, Mike Jones, Bernard and Barry Coshall from Alexandra. So sad to see how Erith has been flattened and the heart ripped out of it. Would love to hear from anyone who still remembers Erith as it was. Cubs on a Friday evening in the Salvation Army hall at the end of the High Street followed by a nice bag of chips from the little tea shop at the bottom of Pier Road.

Good Old Days of Erith in The 50's

In 1957, my friends and I used to go to the open cinema on Sunday afternoons, Pauline Martin, Grace Grant and Renda Tyler. After the film we went to the Diploma Cafe up Pier Road, had hot chocolate and a snack. Then we used to go to Burton's basement club, nearly all rock and roll music. Made more friends, wonder where they all are now. It was run by Henry Kingston, was a really good atmosphere. Remember the old shops in Erith, where have the years gone?!
Anyone else remember Burtons?
