Crescent Road School

A Memory of Erith.

I was born in 1947 in West street, I went to West street infants and then on to Crescent road school when we moved into the prefabs in Betsham road. I was head boy at school in 1958?( still don't understand how that happened). Mrs Payne was headmistress, and Mr Chinery was my teacher. I've seen a few school photos, including 2 with my brother in, but none of my year. I can remember Paul Cobb, John Singleton, Alan Proctor, Peter Mann and some others. I have many memories of Erith, mostly good, and will put pen to paper if anyone is interested. In my teens I had a paper round, working from Derretts in the high street. I had the town round which started at the Police station and ended up in Wheatley terrace. Great times!

I only went to West street school for a couple of years, probably 55/57. I remember the lads that you have just mentioned. We lived at 155 West street with my grandparents, my great grandmother lived next door. She apparently liked a glass of Guiness from the Trafalgar which was nearly opposite our house. My mother told me that her grandfather was" Robert the devil" Austin who by all accounts was a bit of a rascal. He was a Thames lighterman.
1946 7 MAnor Road. Audrey then Pointer. Brother Alan three years older than me. I have spoken to you before Yvonne and I remember Len, other side of MAnor aoad nearer Alexandra road?yes I think.
I hope you are stay My safe and keeping well in these strange times.
Does ANYBODY remember what the iron foundry with the tall chimney was called. It was opposite my house. I remember at the end of MAnor Road there was a Turners asbestos factory also remember Corys wharf of course when there were coal heaps. Struggling to remember names of other factories employers there.
The Turners asbestos factory was just a field away from Betsham road. Sometimes at the weekend we would climb the fence and play in the stored pipes, health &safety? We could also get access to Nappers farm without going down Manor road.
In a previous comment I mentioned the paper round that I did from Deretts in the high street, I probably delivered to your house. I think that you would have been 1 year further on than me. Mrs Payne was still headmistress, and Mr Chinery was my teacher.
I think that the iron foundry was called ERIFO(as soon as I thought about it, it seemed obvious).

I loved growing up in Betsham road, I look at street view sometimes, and as soon as you leave Alexandra road/Reddy road, it becomes a different world.
