My Esh Winning Childhood
A Memory of Esh Winning.
I lived in Brandon Road in the house next door to the Majestic Cinema from about 1940 to 1946. The house in those days was called Dent Dale which was written on the glass panel above the door. I used to go to the school across the road, it has now become the Catholic School. My grandparents lived in West Terrace, no longer there, my Grandfather George Baker was an Overman in Esh Winning Pit. My Uncle Jack used to work for the local Electricity Board and was based in the Wooded Shed alongside the Colliery Offices.
One of my pals was Malcolm Fletcher his father was the Hostler at Esh Winning Colliery. My Uncle George and his family lived in Cornsay Colliery and they moved to Willow Road in Esh Winning where descendants of the family still live.
Some of my relatives lived around Durham, my Aunt Kate used to live in Catchgate, my Aunt Helen lived in Sunderland and my Aunt Olive lived in Washington.
My parents moved to London in 1947 but I spent lots of time back in Esh with both Grandparents and Uncle Georges family. Today I live in Devon.
