My Youth In Farnham Common By Peter Harrison

A Memory of Farnham Common.

I spent my youth in Farnham Common and have nothing but happy memories. We lived in an old house called Glenwood in Templewood Lane. In those days (The 1950's and 1960's) there were very few houses. As you turned the corner where The Grange Hotel was or perhaps still is, you could count the houses on two hands.
I looked the other day on Google and saw that our house has not changed but there has been a lot of building since those days. Also there is the luxury of street lighting!
As a child I would walk down with my brother to the small school in the village called Miss Porter's. It was the beginning of my education and continued at Caldicott, where I remember the Headmaster being a very kindly gentleman by the name of Mr Jack Cooper. In the village in those days there was just the one baker, a Mr Hyde. No doubt there is a Mr Jekyll there somewhere now!
Amongst all those memories was being told about the death of Elvis at the bakers and the burning of the beautiful Yew tree outside the Yew Tree pub (if I remember correctly it was caused by a firework).
I have spent nearly all my working life abroad and I am now retired in the South of France.
Although my father always told me that things change and you should never go back, I would love to see Farnham Common again, I know it will have changed a lot but I am sure there will be many things that I remember.
Especially the Pub in the village, was it called the Dog and Pot?
If anyone remembers me or my family, I would love to hear from them.
