More about this scene

Marked out by plough according to the great architect Sir Decimus Burton's directions, streets radiated from the Mount, which was the highest point in a chain of sandhills. The buildings of the new town of Fleetwood were built from 1836 onwards. They rose out of a rabbit warren, valued in 1824 at £50; the land was all part of the huge estate of Peter Hesketh, whose idea it was to create a town, port and watering place. By 1902, the Mount pavilion had replaced the octagonal summer house designed by Burton and run by Esau Carter Monk, a Fleetwood commissioner.
