Nightmare

A Memory of Fornethy Residential School.

I had the worst experience in my life there ... it was to me like a concentration camp ... they took our candy from us that our parents sent to us ... we couldn't go to the bathroom after a certain time at night ... I had the worst runs one night I and I was caught in the halls of the school - they told me to stand with my face to the wall for it seemed hours in the dark by myself... I must have been ... 7/8 years old maybe older ... you couldn't leave the table till you finished everything on your plate... I would sit crying forever on my own ... they cut your hair if they found lice 😬 I could go on and on 🙁

I was there 1975 and still have nght Marra about that place wen u look back now they were very very cruel to us children as we were back then x
I was their in 1982 I try to forget I remember Miss Robertson and Mrs fletcher also anther on called Robinson sometimes I can smell the place the out of date food I don't have much memory I remember walking up to a wishing stone and making a wish... Horrible horrible place with abusive adults blocked out alot apart from the baths disgusting
i was there in the 60s a horrid place . Kids were smacked in front of us for wetting their pants . The pulled the kids over their knees pulled down their pants and smacked them .
we were not allowed to look out our covers at night , covers were put over our heads and told to keep them there till morning . They took younger kids out the room during the nigt , why i dont know . were not allowed to go to the toilet at night .
We had to walk downstairs for showers etc in our pants only and there was men walking around we were not allowed to turn our backs when showering we had to face the women as no doors on cubicles . Very degrading especially for the older girls that were there . I remember trying towrite a letter to let my mother know about our treatment and they read it, i was put against a wall and pushed about crying my eyes out . i shall never forget that evil place .
this story was my experience Christine Carruthers nee Mcjimpsey . My letter was read in front of me and because i tried to alert my parents about or treament they scolded me and ripped it up in front of us all. They were horrid people .
This evil place should be investigated further . Theres probably more stories to be told and What did happen to these kids that were taken out their beds during the night . Why is the question . I was still to young to understand but the place still haunts me
I was there at this time I hated miss Robertson and I hated the fact that we weren't treated good.when bath time there was 2 in one bath and 2 in other and we were washed by 2 old ladies I still can see there faces and there was other people standing naked watching and waiting for there bath next
I also remember at night we had to put our underware on a chair at bottom of our bed and they would come in and check it to see if we had any small accidents.if anybody did they were woke up and too outside dorm and hit with a slipper on the backside it was scary.the staff sat outside our dorm at nite listening for us talking and I remember one night my sister passed wind and had to stand in corridor for hours in the pitch dark and the place was defo haunted.
We were made to go long mountain walks and if you stopped or cried you were made to roll all the way down the mountain and everyone stood and watched and laughed they were nasty people. The day I was sick eating sweetcorn and I was told to pick it up put it back on plate and continue eating.
I was there in the early 70s can remember miss Holland robinson mcclaren miss march and I loved the place thought it was great but what the onther people say is true but I was lucky all I did was laugh all my time at it I never was bothered by anyone a load of us went from Easterhouse and it was a pure riot most of my pals hated it and would cry to get home god I must have been easily pleased but I really enjoyed it
I also went there in the early 70s, I remember Miss Robinson and miss Holland there was a wee dumpy cruel one.. they were all bad examples of what anyone working with kids should be...... I remember I was in Esk dormitory right on the top floor and the pinafores we had to wear and I also remember often wearing clothes and underwear that didn’t belong to me, really hated that...I was from Easterhouse too . East hall primary
Was there in early 60s. I had the horror of being sent 3 times. I remember the underwear inspections, the slapping, the floral pennies we all had to wear, and woe betide you should get a mark on it. The marching process 2 by 2 to leave the dorm. The exhausting scary walks cross country to the woods. The dead crows terrified me and my sister. Miss Bremner humiliating us dreadfully as a family of bedwetters. This place and its physical and emotional abuse of young girls should be investigated.
Hello can all the girls get in touch carolw1971@hotmail.co.uk it would be appreciated
I was at fornethy house 1976 1977 1978 1979 every year me and my sister she was 5 or 6 when she was sick in her porridge and made to eat it if kids was bad they didn't get there sweats for Saturday for the film with the projector they got milk and biscuit if you had learning problems like reading writing Mrs Robertson would put u out of the class and call you nasty names made u go for long walks you walk up the big hill and made you walk into the town to go to the church being a young age just a aging our wee legs walking there and back remember to shifting having dinner wit u would call dinner and the staff and minister would sit at the main table with best food. I was in s dorm my sister was in c dorm got told a member of staff died in that dorm kids was scared to go to sleep. The staff would come into your dorm to make sure you were sleeping if not you got put out the corridor the same if u needed the loo think u had to told it in to a member of staff came in so they would take you but if u got caught going u would have to stand in the corridor till Mrs fletcher came around.
