1955 AND SOME RATHER UNUSUAL MEMORIES
My parents wanted me to have a good upbringing and sent me to a private school where unfortunately the owners were tyrants. I was continually playing truant, so they then sent me to Pierrepont School in the autumn of 1955 where it was hoped I'd settle down. Alas, my memories of what went before played heavily upon my mind, yet again causing me to start running away. On more than one occasion I was caned by Major Parry for absconding, and eventually I suffered a complete nervous breakdown and was placed into hospital care for 7 months. Looking back I often wish that things had been different. I'd have loved to have been able to enjoy Pierrepont School as it was hoped that I would rather than what actually took place. No-one was to blame for any of this as everything was done with the very best intentions. I wonder if any old boys will remember me, if so then do please contact me on rookiefilmmusic@yahoo.co.uk Ray Darrell

RE: RE: 1955 AND SOME RATHER UNUSUAL MEMORIES
I am so sad to hear of your most unpleasant experiences relating to PH - alas, I was not there long enough to be able to evaluate most people. Although, I do remember being very upset whereupon shortly after my arrival in September 1955, one of the young boys shared the fact he had only just lost his Mother. I thought this to be so unusual for a teenager to have to lose his Mum like that. I have, however since recalled that it was a Mr Williams who was my Housemaster, and his room was next door to the dormitory, where I slept. Have only been back once, and that was in November 1961...the welcome I recieved was not good, in view of them remembering me running away so often. I can also recall seeing barage baloons on the horizon. I have no photographs whatsoever, so am unable to point out anything. I am now sevety years of age, like yourself am retired, but enjoying life.....I still do a p/t job each morning, my interests being Community Radio Presenting, which I have been doing for past thiry two years, every Saturday evening for three hours playing music of 50's/60's. Amateur film-making and also dog agility with my Border Collie 'Pip'. I do hope there are other aspects of your life which bring back more enjoyable memories.

RE: RE: 1955 And Some Rather Unusual Memories
My time at PHS ,was from 28th April 1953 until 2nd April 1957- not a very nice place. Placed in care at an early age, leaving the hard life of Children's Homes to go to PHS at the age of eight, wasn't much different. There were more than a few thug teachers there .Mr.Issit was probably top thug, followed by Messrs Dromgoole, Linde, Parry Snr and Jnr and Roberts (who liked little boys). Mustn't forget, sadist Tugwell. My memories of PHS are probably not unusual, I do recall other lads getting 'the treatment'. Have never returned to that place. Sorry, no happy memories.
