More about this scene

This early 19th-century listed building, built on the site of the former manor house, has had numerous private owners, reputedly including one eccentric lady with a love of snakes who allowed them to entwine themselves about her person while entertaining guests in the drawing room. In the early stages of the Great War, it was used for billeting soldiers of the London Scottish regiment; but at the time this picture was taken, it was being used by the local hospital group as a Rehabilitation Centre. In 1951 the house and grounds were valued at £21,661, but by 1987 this figure had soared to £1.5 million.
